May is National Pet Month, and we believe every member of the family deserves to be part of the adventure, including the ones with paws, tails, and big goofy grins. Whether you’ve got a seasoned co-pilot who’s logged more miles than your GPS or you’re gearing up for your first RV getaway with your furry companion, a little preparation can go a long way in making their travel experience just as fun, safe, and rewarding as yours.

At Luray RV Resort, we know that pets aren’t just travel buddies, they’re part of the family. That’s why we’re proud to be a pet-friendly destination where you and your four-legged explorers can stretch your legs, breathe in the mountain air, and reconnect with nature, side by side. From scenic trails and riverfront strolls to cozy nights around the campfire, our resort is designed to help you make long-lasting memories with your best friend.

Before You Roll: Pet Travel Prep

Taking your pet on the road is one of the best parts of RV life, but it does take a little extra planning to ensure everyone (two- and four-legged) has a smooth and stress-free trip. Think of it as packing for a toddler who can’t talk but knows exactly what they like and don’t like. Here are the essentials to check off before you hit the highway:

  1. Vet Check: Before any big trip, it’s a good idea to schedule a quick visit with your vet. Make sure your pet is up to date on vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, and any necessary medications. If you’re heading into areas with wooded trails or tall grass, extra tick protection is especially important. Ask your vet for a copy of your pet’s vaccine records and a brief note about any medical conditions, just in case you need urgent care on the road. For pets with anxiety, talk to your vet about travel-safe calming aids, especially if you’ll be on the road for long stretches.
  2. Comfort Items: Being in a new space can be exciting, but also overwhelming for pets. Bringing familiar items like their bed, favorite blanket, or well-loved toy can make a big difference in how quickly they settle into the RV. If you crate your pet at night, bring their usual crate and set it up in a quiet corner of your rig, creating a "safe zone" that smells like home.
  3. Food & Water: Stick to your pet’s usual diet to avoid digestive surprises on the road. Pack enough food for the entire trip, plus a little extra in case of delays. Bring collapsible or non-spill bowls for feeding on the go, and don’t forget portable water containers for hikes and excursions. Keeping your pet hydrated is especially important during warm-weather travel.
  4. Safety Gear: Your pet’s safety should be treated just like any other passenger’s. A secure crate, travel harness, or pet seatbelt can help prevent injury during sudden stops. Always have a leash and collar with an up-to-date ID tag. Bonus points for including a recent photo of your pet on your phone, just in case you get separated.

Pro Tip: If this is your pet’s first time RVing, try a short practice drive or overnight stay in the driveway. Let them explore the space with the engine off, then take a spin around town to see how they respond. A little prep now goes a long way in building their comfort and confidence on the road.

On the Road: Keeping Pets Happy in the RV

Once you hit the road, keep your pet’s needs in mind just like any other family member:

  1. Plan Rest Stops Every 2–3 Hours: Dogs (and some cats!) need regular potty breaks, chances to stretch their legs, and time to sniff around. Look for pet-friendly rest areas or safe pull-off spots where they can walk and decompress.
  2. Never Leave Pets Unattended in a Hot RV: Even with windows cracked, RVs can heat up fast, just like cars. If you’re stepping away, make sure someone stays behind or arrange for pet care. A quick errand for you could become a heat risk for them.
  3. Manage the Temperature Inside: On hot days, use window shades, vent fans, or A/C to maintain a comfortable temperature within your unit. In cooler temps, ensure they have blankets or layers. Dogs are especially sensitive to extreme temperatures when parked in direct sun.
  4. Create a Cozy Nook Just for Them: Pets feel safer with a designated “den.” Whether it’s their crate, a blanket tucked under the table, or a soft bed by your feet, give them a familiar space where they can nap, observe, or retreat when the RV gets noisy or busy.
  5. Offer Distractions on Long Travel Days: A frozen treat toy, chew bone, or puzzle feeder can keep your pet engaged while you focus on the road. It also helps ease anxiety if they’re new to the RV life.

Explore Shenandoah’s Top Trails with Your Pup

Shenandoah National Park is full of breathtaking views, cascading waterfalls, and scenic trails—and the best part? Many of them are pet-friendly! Here are some of our favorite hikes to check out during your visit, including a few with incredible summit views and waterfall rewards.

Hawksbill Summit Trails:

Looking to reach the highest peak in Shenandoah? At 4,051 feet, the Hawksbill Summit offers stunning 360-degree views of the Shenandoah Valley, Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Virginia Piedmont from its stone platform. There are a few different ways to reach the top, each offering a slightly different experience:

  1. Hawksbill Loop – A 2.1-mile round-trip trail rated moderate, this loop takes about 2 hours to complete and is perfect for those wanting a varied path up and down.
  2. Hawksbill Summit Trail – A 1.7-mile out-and-back hike, also rated moderate, with an estimated time of 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  3. Upper Hawksbill Trail – At 2.1 miles round-trip and rated easiest, this is a gentler option that still offers the same stunning summit views, taking about 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete.

Waterfall Hikes:

  1. Rose River Falls – This beautiful 4-mile circuit is rated moderate and features streams, a footbridge, and a 67-foot waterfall. Estimated hiking time is around 4.5 hours.
  2. South River Falls – A 3.3-mile loop rated moderate, this trail offers wildflowers, birdwatching, and an 83-foot waterfall. Plan for about 2.5 hours.
  3. White Oak Falls (Upper & Lower) –
  • Lower Trail: A quick 2-mile out-and-back, rated easiest (1.5 hours).
  • Upper Trail: A longer 4.6-mile round trip, rated moderate (3.5 hours). Both offer scenic waterfalls and peaceful forest views.

More Great Hikes:

  1. Marys Rock Summit   This 3.7-mile round-trip trail climbs 1,210 feet to a sweeping overlook of the Shenandoah Valley and Massanutten Mountain. Rated moderate, allow about 3.5 hours to complete.
  2. Little Devils Stairs Loop – For experienced hikers (and energetic pups), this 7.4-mile loop is strenuous but rewarding. Expect about 8.5 hours of hiking through streams, wildflowers, and rugged terrain.

Dog-Friendly Trail Rules:

Shenandoah is one of the few national parks that welcomes dogs on most trails—but there are a few important rules to follow:

  1. Leashes Required: Dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times.
  2. Pack It Out: Always bag your dog’s waste. Trash bins are available throughout the park. (Pro tip: If you’re between bins, tuck the waste bag under your windshield wiper until you find one—just don’t forget it’s there!)
  3. Stay on Designated Trails: Dogs are only allowed on marked and designated hiking trails.

By following these rules, we help keep Shenandoah safe and welcoming for everyone—and show that pet owners can be responsible trail stewards. Check out this full list of minimum impact practices from Leave No Trace.

Pro tip:  Don’t forget to spoil your best friend! Stop by a local farmers market or pop into Blue Ridge Dog in nearby Harrisonburg for homemade pet treats, travel supplies, and toys.

Etiquette Matters: Camping with Courtesy

At Luray RV Resort, we love welcoming pets, but being a pet-friendly campground means everyone plays a part in keeping the experience safe, peaceful, and enjoyable for all guests (furry and otherwise). A little consideration goes a long way in creating a space where everyone can relax and have fun.

Here are a few simple but important rules to follow:

  1. Keep pets leashed and under control any time they’re outside your RV or vacation rental. Even the friendliest dog can be unpredictable in a new environment, and not all guests are comfortable with off-leash encounters.
  2. Clean up after your pet, every time. We’ve placed waste stations throughout the resort to make this easy. Picking up promptly keeps our green spaces clean and safe for everyone to enjoy.
  3. Be mindful of barking and noise, especially during early mornings, evenings, and designated quiet hours. Dogs that bark excessively may need some extra walks, playtime, or comfort to settle in.
  4. Never leave pets unattended outdoors. For their safety and the comfort of others, pets should not be tied out or left alone at your site. RV interiors can also heat up quickly, so if you need to step away, make sure your pet is safe, cool, and secure.
  5. Respect your neighbors. If your pet is energetic or vocal, it’s helpful to chat with nearby campers. A friendly heads-up and a little extra awareness go a long way in building campground camaraderie.
